TRACKING
Tracking is a way to show a dog's ability to follow a specific person's scent over varied terrain & distances, despite distractions from the surroundings. Tracking Competitions can take place anywhere from paddocks & bushland, to urban areas for more advanced levels of Tracking Search Dog testing.
Tracking is based on a search for a 'lost' person (the tracklayer) who has followed a path predetermined by the judge who originally plotted the course. During the tracklaying, the 'lost' person drops articles at given places on the track, then hides at the end of the track under a groundsheet where they wait to be found. To track, each dog wears a harness & a 10m long lead. At a set time from when the track is laid, the dog is brought to the starting point where the tracklayer has left a scented article. The dog takes its scent from this & is encouraged to begin to track it.
All courses have a set number of turns & articles along its length. The dogs are required to indicate these articles to prove they are "on track" & are ready to progress to the next, more challenging level of testing. Poodles of all sizes can be successful at tracking, & the Poodle Club is proud of our members who have gained their Tracking Championship & Tracking Search Dog titles. Tracking takes place in many varied areas throughout the state during Autumn & Winter.
