Gregory J Ross B.Ec.,B.Sc.,Dip.Ed.
My first Toy Poodle was purchased in 1969, and the first Toy Poodle I bought to exhibit was a black male, in 1971; I entered my first all breeds show and won Puppy In Show. Not a clue what I was doing, just going into the ring each time my exhibitor number was called, collecting sashes and ribbons and prizes… I was instantly hooked! "Devil" subsequently went oversize and was not shown again, however I was fortunate to buy another black male Aust Ch Jomarci Bold Warrior who won BIG and many other in-group awards, as well as 3 Royal Challenges, and it was on poor, patient "Spooky" that I learned to trim.
In 1976 I went to England and bought Aust Ch Tuttlebees Lucy Lectric who was to become the foundation bitch under my Bartak prefix, producing champions for the next 5 generations, culminating in Aust Ch Bartak A Lectric Scandal.
My last show as an exhibitor in Australia was the 1st Poodle National in 1988 and Scandal was fortunate to win Best In Show, at only her 3rd show. Just days later, I gave away my Poodles to close friends and moved to work in Hong Kong for five years. Subsequently I worked in London, then Brunei Darussalam, and for the past 15 years I have been living in Kota Kinabalu Malaysia where I own a restaurant.
In association with Judy McMahon we produced the series of books titled Poodles In Australia. Not living in Australia made it impossible to collect the necessary data to continue the series – hopefully someone will continue this project one day.
In 1976 I joined the South Australian Canine Association Judges Training Scheme, and over the following years participated in the judges training schemes of SA and NSW and later Hong Kong, and was subsequently an approved FCI All Breeds Judge in 1990.
I have been fortunate to have judged Poodles (and all breeds) in 23 countries, as well as 16 Poodle specialty shows around the world, including The Poodle Clubs of South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales and The Toy Poodle Society of New South Wales. Other special events I have judged include the 1st Supreme Poodle NSW, Pal Blue Ribbons in New Zealand, Show of Winners in Denmark, Dog of the Year in South Africa, and many others.
I have been invited to judge this club's specialty show 3 times; unfortunately I had to decline the first two invitations due to other judging commitments, and I am delighted to be able to accept the club's invitation this time and I am looking forward to this appointment.
