RESCUE/REHOMING

Poodles don't come up very often for rescue, which is a good thing as it means owners are looking after their poodles. Possible reasons for a poodle needing to be rehomed are: dumped at a pound, family break ups, or owner no longer able to care for the poodle.

Occasionally (maybe 1 or 2 a month) we have a poodle that needs to be rehomed. We maintain a list of people interesting in helping rehome poodles, this is not a "first in best served" list. The poodle will go to the most suitable home, which depends on several factors eg. previous poodle experience and family situation.

If you wish to be placed on the list then contact us with your details. Caroline & Marlene Sharpe, on (03)9598-5775 or email: cassalion@hotmail.com

EXAMPLES OF PAST RESCUE/REHOMING

OLLIEDOG

I had a phone call from a lady who had a entire pedigree 4 year old standard poodle called Oliver, and needed to be re-homed due to a family break-up. I organised for a Vet nurse called Jodi, who had her name down on the rescue waiting list, to have a look at him. Jodi rang me several days later to say that the owner brought him into her Vet clinic and surrendered him, as nobody in the family wanted him. He was in a horrible matted mess and needed clipping immediately so Jodi rang Lady and the Tramp dog grooming and they offered to clip and bath him for free. Unfortunately Oliver didn’t fit in with Jodi’s family due to some dominance issues that he has. So we took him on until  the right home could be found. He was a very sweet and loving dog. First thing was to book him into be desexed which didn’t faze him. Luckily we found him the perfect home with a friend of a friend called Emma, she had grown up with Standards. He has now settled in and is very much loved!

Thankyou to Jodi and Sandringham Veterinary Clinic for looking after him until I could take him, Lady and the Tramp for grooming him when he badly needed it, and to Emma for adopting him.

TOY POODLE

On poodle day at Melbourne Royal I had a phone call from a friend who regularly visits North Melbourne Lost Dogs Home (LDH). She told me that there was an old toy poodle that needed saving. I rang up LDH and we organised to take him as long as he passed his physical test. He passed but had to be desexed and needed his ears and teeth cleaned. I picked him up from LDH and found a lovely boy who just wanted to cuddle. I looked after him for one night and then he was dropped off with Joan Nutt, to be fostered until the right home came up.

Thankyou to Joan for looking after him, giving him a clip, and re-homing him.

MAX THE MINI

Max’s owner rang me on a Wednesday to say that she was moving interstate and needed a home for Max by the Saturday, or he was being dumped at the pound on the way to the Airport! He was only an 11 month old puppy. Only took a couple of calls to find the right home, problem was Max lived in Frankston, the new owner in Kilsyth and with the short time to rehome him, she did not have the time to travel to Frankston to collect him. I drove to Frankston, picked up Max and met the new owner half way. She was delighted with her new baby.

GABBY THE TOY

Gabby had been rehomed through PCOV about a year ago and the owner became unable to continue caring for her. Once again, a couple of calls and another good home was found. Thank you to Jo Turnley for transporting Gabby to her new home.

Many club members probably don’t realise what goes on behind the scenes with rescue/rehoming. Usually we suggest contacting the breeder first, but this is not always possible with unregistered and petshop dogs. Most of the time it is a simple case of just putting people in contact with each other to rehome poodles. Sometimes it is a little harder and takes a bit longer to find them a home. To me, it shows a true love of the breed when people are prepared to go the extra mile to help out. Thankyou to all people involved in rescue/rehoming.

If anyone would like to have their name put down as a contact for helping out with breed rescue situations, then give me a call on (03)9598-5775.
